Image Software Facilitates Examination of Histological Preparations

Kaliurang (UII News) – It is very important to hold annual regional scientific meetings to keep in touch with members and share knowledge for the development of Anatomy and Histology. This activity is planned every year, although due to each other's busy schedule, the schedule is often delayed.

This was conveyed by dr. Ika Fidyaningsih, M.Sc from the Department of Histology, FK UII, agrees to take part in the scientific meeting of the Indonesian Association of Anatomists (PIN PAAI) Yogyakarta Commissariat which is held every year, with alternating venues. This time the PAAI PIN meeting was held on Saturday, January 24 2014 / 03 Rabiul Akhir 1436 H, on the 2nd Floor of the Theater Room, Library Building, Faculty of Medicine, Gadajah Mada University.

Doctor Ika further said that those who attended this meeting were generally doctors, dentists, veterinarians in the fields of Anatomy and Histology. Other participants were biologists or anthropologists, from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Biology from various universities in Yogyakarta, for example FKUII, FK UMY, FKG UMY, FK UGM, FKH UGM, Biology. Participants from the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Islam Indonesia namely 1 staff from the Department of Anatomy and one staff from the Department of histology, one person from the Department of Physiology.

“Activities in the 2015 PAAI PIN include; Stereology lecture, poster presentation, Image J practice, he explained.

Doctor Ika also added from the event that histological research regarding the assessment of organ structure images still does not have a standard. However, stereology offers an approach for a more precise and accurate assessment. This science studies how to count a particle in an object or space with an irregular shape. Several journals have required histological assessment to be based on steeology, although many journals do not require it. The results showed that the calculation was more precise than without regard to stereology. However, the production of the most sliced preparations means that it requires more time and costs. While research in Indonesia, funds are still very limited.

“Meanwhile, the image software makes it easier to examine histological preparations. This is interesting to introduce to students who are doing histology research," he added. At the end of her report, doctor Ika hoped that the educational staff of FK UII could always be active and take part in scientific activities like this. Wibowo
