(dsh)

MEDAN (fk.uii.ac.id) – Zavia Putri Salsabila, Fathiyatul Mudzkiroh, Violetta Meitrie Sugianto, a student of the Medicine Study Program who was a delegation of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic Universitas Islam Indonesia (FM UII) in the Scripta Research Festival 2021 scientific competition, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara (FM USU) managed to achieve brilliant results as the Second Winner in the National Literature Review. This achievement was the repetition of the similar achievement at the last Scripta 2018.

In the final round which was held by online hosted in Medan on January 29-31, 2021, the FM UII delegation had to compete with nine other finalists from various universities. They have strong traditions in the scientific field, such as the University of Indonesia, Diponegoro University, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Padjadjaran University, Hasanuddin University, Jember State University, as well as USU as the host.

The Scripta Research Festival is one of the largest national scientific event organized by the USU Faculty of Medicine’s Standing Committees on the Student Administration Research Exchange (SCORE PEMA). The purpose of organizing this event is to create and support the development of a scientific climate among medical students throughout Indonesia through symposium activities and scientific competitions.

The major theme raised in this year’s Scripta is: “Novel Innovation and Strategy in Genitourinary Disease Prevention as an Improved Health Solution”. It has four field competitions, namely: Literature Review, Scientific Essays, Public Posters, and Educational Videos.

In accordance with the competition theme which focuses on genitourinary disease, in this competition the FM UII delegation presented a scientific paper entitled: “Characterization of Liposome Encapsulated MicroRNA-203 Using Single Stranded Oligonucleotide (A9g Aptamer) Conjugation as a Novel Targeted Prostate Cancer Cell Therapy”.

According to Fathiyatul Mudzkiroh, one of the FM UII delegates, the background or idea of composing the paper was inspired by the fact that prostate cancer is a malignant disease in men with the second highest prevalence in the world after lung cancer. The highest number of prostate cancer cases is found in America and Europe, with the highest death rate in Asia. In Indonesia itself the number has reached 10.3 per 100,000 populations and is predicted to continue to increase in the future.

Prostate cancer also has a pathogenesis stage, namely dependent androgen and independent androgen, where the current treatment can only be applied in one phase (dependent or independent). In addition, the recent modalities also have risky side effects, for example chemotherapy and radiotherapy. So we are innovating to make a new proposal that can specifically target prostate cancer, at all phases, and have minimal side effects,” explained the batch 2019 student. (dsh)

Get to Know Prostate Cancer and its Prevention

The prostate is a male genital organ that produces prostate fluid (a component of the ejaculate fluid) and is located under the bladder, in front of the rectum, and “wraps” the back urethra.

Prostate cancer is known as a malignant disease with the highest case in the male urogenital system. Research shows that this case is mostly found in patients over 50 years old with the highest case in the age group of more than 80 years.

Interestingly, nowadays one of the factors that enlarge the case of prostate cancer is the increased awareness of each individual against this disease. It is along with the increasing number of health-related information that can be obtained easily from various print or electronic media including the internet.

This increases public awareness to do screening on prostate specific antigen (PSA) examinations for early detection. The discovery of an accidental increase in PSA levels on laboratory tests is often a clue to early-stage prostate cancer that does not show symptoms or clinical signs.

Prostate cancer can cause a diversity of symptoms which are very disturbing to the patient. If the cancer has pressed on the urethra, the patient may experience difficulty urinating, painful urination, and blood in the urine. In other less frequent cases, patients also complain of difficulty defecating due to compression of the rectum by cancer.

As in other cancers, prostate cancer can also spread (metastasize) to various locations, either through lymph or blood vessels. The targeted locations include lymph glands in the retroperitoneal area, hip bones, thighbones, spine, ribs, to a range of important organs such as the lungs, liver, and even the brain. This will have an increasingly serious impact on the patient, such as the emergence of bone pain, fractures at the site of metastasis, or neurological disorders due to the spread in the spine. Furthermore, metastasis in important organs can cause organ damage that can lead to death.

One of the factors which are believed to increase the risk of prostate cancer is the influence of the environment and daily activities habits. Bad habits such as smoking, excessive fat consumption, and exposure to chemicals such as cadmium or Cd (found in many batteries and electric devices) are associated with an increased case of prostate cancer, so it is important for people to know and prevent it.

In addition, there are also many kinds of foods which are considered to prevent prostate cancer, including those rich in vitamin A, vitamin E, beta carotene, phytoestrogens, lycophenes, or selenium, such as: tomatoes, soybeans, sea fish, meat, whole grains, and so on. Of course, this kind of food is highly recommended to be consumed adequately and regularly as part of prevention efforts.

By knowing the various risk factors from the environment and these habits, it is only normal that we start implementing a healthy lifestyle from an early age as part of our efforts to avoid many diseases such as prostate cancer. With a healthy body, we can increase our productivity and our life will be livelier to help others. (dsh)
