Duties of a Copyeditor

Kaliurang (UII News) – Copy editing is a process of reviewing and correcting written material. In the context of print publications, copy editing work is done before typesetting and repeated before proof reading and at the final stage of an editorial.

This was conveyed by dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra., M.Sc., Ph.D., Sp.A, as a speaker at the Copyediting and Metric Journal Workshop, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Islam Indonesia, which was held on Saturday, 18 Safar 1441 H/ 19 October 2019 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Islam Indonesia, Jalan Kaliurang Km.14,5 Sleman, Yogyakarta, which was attended by internal and external participants of FK UII, which is farthest from Tanjung Pura.

In the material, dr. Dian explained that the purpose of copy editing is to improve accuracy, increase readability, adjust the purpose or scope of the journal, ensure articles are free from errors, omissions, inconsistencies and unnecessary repetition, check and correct writing errors (data/facts). , language errors, sentence structure, diction, spelling, punctuation, and so on, word consistency in writing, author's style of language, relief and SARA elements and being able to represent the interests of writers, publishers and readers.

Furthermore, dr. Dian taught the workshop participants and emphasized that a copy editor is a person who carries out technical tasks in the form of repairing and checking manuscripts according to applicable rules, sometimes referred to as a copy chief, or copy desk chief or news editor. Copy-editor is a professional nomenclature in England (UK), and another name for a sub-editor is The Sub. In commercial publication institutions (newspapers, online news), senior copy editors are often called: Chief subeditor with lower authority than editors in general.

"The difference between an editor and a copy editor is that the position of the editor is higher than the copy editor, then the editor's job is to examine it at the macroscopic level and ensure that the contents of the article are substantially correct or substantive editing, so that the copy editor is able to examine the presentation of the substance or often referred to as microscopic level," said dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra., M.Sc., Ph.D., Sp.A.

It was further added that after understanding copy editing and copy editors, the principle of work that a copu editor must do is use correction marks (mechanical editing), understand interrelated parts to become interrelated texts, edit language, form, sentence structure, and diction (choice of words), carry out content editing according to actual data and facts, as well as understand permissions or citation permissions from publishers protected by copyright law as well as print out information to the layouter about how the manuscript is set, according to the explanation.

Before the workshop was held, as the Dean of FK UII, dr. Linda Rosita, M.Kes, Sp.PK in her speech said that the material for this activity was very good, so it would be a loss if you didn't follow it to the end.

"In the FK UII 2019 copyediting and metric journal workshop, the committee has presented speakers who are experts in their fields, so the hope is that the participants can get extraordinary lessons from this workshop," said the Dean of FK UII, dr. Linda Rosita M.Kes, Sp.PK.

As per the existing schedule, FK UII presented Dr. Rully Charitas Indra Prahmana S., S.Sc., M.Pd as a speaker on metric journals and how to improve them, then dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra., M.Sc., Ph.D., Sp.A as a speaker about the introduction of copy editors, reference sources, and procedures for checking abbreviations, symbols, spelling, quotations, and other writing procedures and the last speaker, namely dr. Junaedy Yunus, Ph.D, who discussed the duties of a copy editor and the basic techniques of copyediting.

"After getting all the material received, the workshop participants took part in the next event, namely copyediting practice guided by dr. Junaedy Yunus, Ph.D by evaluating the materials brought by the participants and the copyediting materials provided by the committee," said dr. Miranti Dewi Pramaningytas, M.Sc as chairman of the 2019 UII Faculty of Medicine Copy Editing and Metric Journal Workshop Committee. Wibowo
