SMART Lab Class 2019 : Learning to Handle Experimental Animals

Sleiman (UII News) – The use of experimental animals in research is certainly no stranger to our ears. This is very useful, one of which is to help researchers understand a disease and its treatment. So in this case it is needed skill good for controlling the experimental animals.

Recognizing the importance of knowledge and skills regarding the treatment of experimental animals in the laboratory, Scientific Medical Activities of Research and Technology Faculty of Medicine Universitas Islam Indonesia (SMART FK UII) as a student activity unit engaged in research, held the "Lab Class 2019: Experimental Animal Handling Techniques" event on Saturday, 9 November 2019 at the Integrated Laboratory of FK UII.

Acting as the speaker is Dr. dr. Eti Nurwening Sholikhah, M.Med., M.Kes who is a researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing at Gadjah Mada University. In his presentation, Eti explained the ethical use of experimental animals, especially using the 3R principles (Replacement, reduction, refinement) and The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare. In addition, participants were also explained how to select and administer an ingredient to experimental animals which was shown from the table along with the photos shown during the explanation of the material.

Not only limited to the delivery of theory, Cla Labss 2019 also provides an opportunity for all participants to practice directly handling experimental animals in the form of white rats properly and correctly, starting from the process handling (how to take and hold a good rat), the technique of sonde (putting a substance into the mouth using a sonde), to termination (injecting ketamine which makes the rat "faint" so that it can be dissected and its organs removed).

The participants seemed enthusiastic about following the series of activities Lab Class 2019 This is due to the amount of knowledge gained, especially regarding experimental animal problems.
