Proportion of head trauma due to traffic accidents in PKU Hospital

PROPORTION OF HEAD TRAUMA DUE TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
AT PKU MUHAMMADIYAH HOSPITAL, YOGYAKARTA
PERIOD JANUARY 1, 2007- DECEMBER 31, 2007
 
 
Background: Head trauma is a major cause of death and disability worldwide where traffic accidents are the main cause of around 40-50%. The majority of head trauma occurs at the age of 15-45 years with the highest incidence in men.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the proportion of head trauma incidents and deaths due to traffic accidents based on gender, age, severity of head trauma, category of road users, types of accidents, diagnosis of head trauma, management of head trauma and use of safety devices.
 
Research methods: The research conducted was a non-experimental, descriptive research with a cross-sectional research design and a descriptive analysis was carried out on the variables that had been determined.
Results: Head trauma patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were 235 people with a proportion of head trauma due to traffic accidents of 56% and a proportion of deaths of 7,7%. Based on gender, the highest incidence of head trauma was in men by 57% with a mortality rate of 61%, based on age, the highest was in the range of 25-44 years by 34% with the highest death rate in the age group > 60 years by 33%, based on the severity of head trauma the most in mild head trauma by 60% with the highest death rate in severe head trauma by 94%, based on the category of road users the most on motorcycle users by 43% with a death rate of 44%, based on the type of accident the most on collisions by 30% with a crash rate mortality by 50%, based on the diagnosis of the most use of CT scans by 87% with a mortality rate of 83%, based on the management of the most hospitalizations by 94% with a mortality rate of 89% and non-operative / conservative management by 92% with a rate of mortality by 94%.
 
Conclusion:  The proportion of head trauma incidents due to traffic accidents at PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Hospital for the period 1 January 2007 – 31 December 2007 was 56% with a proportion of deaths of 7,7%.
