Kaliurang (UII News) – Mosquitoes play an important role in spreading disease through bites. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), Chikingunya & Zika (Arbovirus) and West Nile have similar clinical symptoms, so a molecular differentiating diagnostic technology is needed for these viruses that are accurate, precise, fast and specific.

This was conveyed by doctors Novyan Lusiyana, M.Sc and doctors Fitria Siwi Nurohmah, M.Sc and Mujiyanto, S.Si (Laboran) while participating in the Arbovirus Workflow at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Erlangga (UNAIR) on Wednesday-Friday, 4-6 Robiul Awal 1438 H/1-3 February 2017.

According to Doctor Novyan, mosquitoes are vectors for several viruses in molecular epidemiological studies and virus mapping in the field, this technology is also needed. Mosquitoes as disease vectors need to be understood about the breeding process and ways of infection of mosquitoes in the BSL-3 animal facility, that's why Medicine sent its staff to participate in these activities.

He further explained that recently it has been understood that mosquitoes have the potential to be misused as biological weapons as well as part of the chain of zoonotic diseases (transmission from animals to humans or vice versa), so it is necessary to use the latest detection technology for arboviruses quickly, accurately and precisely. .

"Arbovirus detection technology in both human patients and virus detection in mosquitoes can be used with detection technology: MULTIPEX real Time PCR and Micro-Volume Spectrophotometer and specific differentiating Primers," he said. Wibowo
