Medical Students Participate in Metabolic Syndrome Seminar at AMSW, Surabaya

        Kaliurang (UII News) – UII Medical students attend seminars and outreach to the public about metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is closely related to various risk factors that influence the occurrence of heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disorders.

        This was conveyed by Fanana Firdausi, a 2014 UII Medical student while attending the 2016 Airlangga Medical Scientific Week (AMSW) which was held on 13-18 Dzulhijah 1437 H/15-18 September 2016 at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya which was attended by a delegation of Medical students throughout Indonesia.

        According to Fanana, in this activity all participants gained an understanding of the three biggest contributors to death in Indonesia, including obesity, diabetes and hypertension.

        Further explained by Fanana, metabolic syndrome is a condition where several things occur, such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and an unusual increase in cholesterol levels. If this happens together, it can increase the risk of disease.

        After receiving the seminar, then all the participants who were divided into several groups, then provided socialization and education to the community at the Heroes Monument in Surabaya by using posters.

Attend seminars on the theme New Research to Empower Nation's Health with the material presented diabetic foot, diabetes and dyslipidemia in metabolic syndrome, nutritional disorder, obesity and metabolic syndrome, emergency of cardiovascular risk in metabolic syndrome, and herbal medicine in diabetes mellitus made Fanana Firdaus, a 2014 FK UII student along with other medical students from all over Indonesia, feel it is important to understand about metabolic disorders in humans.

"The material presented has further strengthened my knowledge after going through block 2.6 of metabolic disorders. Participating in this seminar has also made me more aware that the profession that I will be pursuing in the future is a profession that requires my seriousness and caution in pursuing it in the future,” he said.
