In the special edition at the end of this year, the editors will present special report journey of achievement until the end of the year.

  1. Medical Student Research Center (EXIT MRC) Annual Scientific Expo & Seminar 2020 Andalas University Faculty of Medicine

Mochamad Afifudin, class 2017 student who became a delegate of FK UII at the 2020 Medical Student Research Center (EXIT MRC) Scientific Expo and Annual Scientific Seminar competition, FK Andalas University (UNAND), managed to achieve brilliant results by appearing as 1st winner in the National Scientific Essay. In the final round which was held by online on April 30 2020, Afifudin managed to beat other finalists who came from various universities with strong traditions in the scientific field, such as the University of North Sumatra, Gadjah Mada University, Hasanuddin University, Sriwijaya University, Sebelas Maret University, Jember State University, to the host Andalas University.

As with other national-level scientific competitions, EXIT MRC 2020 also adopts a preliminary and final system. After going through rigorous judging of scientific papers submitted from various public and private universities from various regions in Indonesia, Mochamad Afifudin's work is finally entitled "Apigenin Potential with Triple Helix microRNA Conjugation (microRNA-145 and Anti-microRNA-183) via the Hydrogel Scaffold Method." Encapsulated Superparamagnetic Iron-Oxide Nanoparticle-Aptamer as a Novel Targeted Prostate Cancer Therapy” was successfully passed and presented at final rounds.

“The essay reviews Apigenin conjugated RNA-based therapy with SPIONs-Aptamer encapsulation as a combination therapy to increase the sensitivity of targeted therapy. The hope is that the two combinations can increase the efficacy of patients with minimized toxicity to normal cells," explained Afif, Mochamad Afifudin's nickname.

According to Afif, the idea of making this work came about because he wanted to optimize cancer therapy (which often uses curcumin) with other agents. In the end, he found a recent study which showed that Apigenin (a phenolic derivative similar to curcumin) actually had higher toxicity to prostate cancer cells. In addition, recent preclinical studies have also shown a higher ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells in the combination of apigenin therapy and genetic therapy.

  1. Muhammadiyah Jakarta Scientific Competition (MAJESTYNAS) 2020 Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta

At the national scientific competition event MAJESTYNAS FK Muhammadiyah University Jakarta, the UII FK delegation consisting of Muhammad Hanif Al Asad, Dita Juliana Pravita, and Ridhwanah Nadhiratuz Zahrah won 3rd place in the National Literature Review after competing hard with delegates from various well-known universities in Indonesia, such as the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, and Sebelas Maret State University in the final round which took place separately online on July 19, 2020.

MAJESTYNAS is a scientific competition with a large number of participants because it is open to all health students throughout Indonesia, so that the participants are not only medical students, but also dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, and so on. Of the many participants, the top 5 with the best scores were taken to present their work in the final round.

In the final round, the work presented by the FK UII delegation was entitled: "Potential Therapeutic Combination of Immunoliposome-Encapsulated Cisplatin-Conjugated Cisplatin Chemotherapy Agents as the Latest Curative Modality for Neuroblastoma in Children".

"The underlying background of our scientific essay is due to the high prevalence of neuroblastoma and the number five year survival rate low in children. So from there we came up with an idea regarding a combination therapy regimen to maximize the curative process for this cancer. Through this work, we want to offer a breakthrough regarding the curative process of neuroblastoma that utilizes the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin with a more targeted and more efficient toxicity effect," explained Hanif.

  1. Hasanuddin Scientific Fair (HSF) 2020 Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University

Mochamad Afifudin, who was a delegation from UII Faculty of Medicine at the 2020 HSF scientific competition, Hasanuddin University Faculty of Medicine (UNHAS), again won brilliant results by appearing as 1st Place in the National Scientific Essay. In the final round which was held by online on Saturday, 29 August 2020, Afifudin managed to beat other finalists from various top universities in Indonesia, such as Diponegoro University, Hasanuddin University, Brawijaya University, Airlangga University, and Gadjah Mada University.

HSF is an annual activity organized by the Medical Youth Research Club (MYRC) FK UNHAS. This year, HSF raised the general theme of "Obstetrics and Gynecology: Current Updates of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Management Through a Holistic Approach of Healthcare" with six major sub-activities including a literature review competition, research paper congress (RPC), public posters, educational videos, scientific essays, and symposiums.

Like other national-level scientific competitions, HSF 2020 also adopts a preliminary and final system. After going through rigorous judging of scientific papers submitted from various public and private universities from various regions in Indonesia, finally Mochamad Afifudin's work was entitled "MicroRNA Triple Helix Formulary from miRNA-150 and hsa-miRNA-6852 Using the Aptamer-Conjugated Hydrogel Scaffold Method as a Novel." Targeted Cervical Cancer Cell Therapy” successfully passed and presented at final rounds.

According to Afif, the idea of making this work arose because he saw from various research data that the prevalence of cervical cancer has increased again in recent times and several therapies have experienced resistance due to mutations from the HPV virus.

“Besides that, a new strain of HPV has also been found which can also cause pre-cancerous lesions. Then we tried to find literature showing the effectiveness of oncogene transcriptional factor inhibitors from HPV such as the miRNA, and it turned out to be quite effective," explained Afif, Mochamad Afifudin's nickname.

Afifudin's achievements should be appreciated considering that until now the problem of cancer is still one of the scourges of the world of health. Data from balloon shows that in 2018 there were 18,1 million new cases of cancer with a mortality rate of 9,6 million deaths, of which 1 in 5 men and 1 in 6 women in the world experienced cancer. The data also states that 1 in 8 men and 1 in 11 women in the world die from cancer.

Meanwhile, the incidence of cancer in Indonesia based on data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia which was released on January 31 2019 reached 136.2 per 100.000 population. This number ranks 8th in Southeast Asia and 23rd in Asia, ranking 23rd. The highest incidence rate for women is breast cancer, which is 42,1 per 100.000 population with an average death rate of 17 per 100.000 population, and cervical cancer is 23,4 per 100.000 population with an average death rate of 13,9 per 100.000 population.

With more and more scientist young people who have an interest in studying and researching the latest developments related to cancer therapy such as Afifudin, it is not impossible that one day the results of their studies can be applied in a real way in the form of the latest therapeutic protocols in cancer cases that give results treatment better for the patient.

At the 2020 HSF event, the FK UII delegation consisting of Farras Intan Barnita and Yoni Aulia Masruroh also won 3rd place in the Public Poster National. In this branch, the FK UII delegation had to compete with nine other finalists from various well-known universities in the final round, such as Sebelas Maret University, Sriwijaya University, host of UNHAS, and so on.

The work presented by the FK UII delegation was entitled: "Upset with Preeclampsia, Prevent it with Love!". According to Yoni, their interest in making this public poster was due to the problem of preeclampsia in pregnant women which is one of the most common cases and one of the most common causes of death in the fetus and pregnant women.

From data owned by the government, the maternal mortality rate in Indonesia in 2016 was still high, namely 305 per 100.000 live births. Very far from the target sustainable development goals (SDG's) in 2015 which targets a maternal mortality rate of 102 per 100.000 live births. The three main causes of the high maternal mortality rate in Indonesia are still dominated by: bleeding (30,13%), preeclampsia (27,1%), and infection (7,3%).

Reporting from UpToDatePreeclampsia itself is a condition in which there is an increase in blood pressure accompanied by one or more of the following conditions: protein in the urine, low platelet levels, increased serum creatinine levels, elevated liver enzymes, pulmonary edema, persistent headaches, and visual disturbances. This condition occurs after a gestational age of more than 20 weeks.

Patients with preeclampsia may experience symptoms such as: severe or persistent headaches, visual disturbances (such as blurred vision or sensitivity to light), pain in the upper right abdomen, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, unwell, nausea, vomiting, swelling on the body, and so on.

"Preeclampsia can be caused by several things, one of which is a careless diet and not fulfilling balanced nutrition. Through this public poster, we try to provide information regarding this matter so that pregnant women can prevent preeclampsia," explained Yoni.

As is known, Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that can cause cognitive and behavioral disorders that interfere with the patient's social functions and daily activities. Tracing its history, Alzheimer's disease was first described by the psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in 1907. At that time Alois Alzheimer found changes in the brains of autopsied patients, in the form of amyloid plaques and paired helical filaments. This anatomical abnormality is believed to be the basis for the change in the patient's mental status so that since then we have known this case as Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is not a disease that can be underestimated. A publication in 2016 showed that there are around 46,8 million people with this disease worldwide. Along with increasing human life expectancy, it is estimated that the incidence of Alzheimer's will also continue to increase until it reaches 131,5 million sufferers in 2050.

In addition to the growing number, Alzheimer's is also a frequent cause of death, especially in the elderly. In the United States, Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death and costs the health budget up to 172 billion dollars per year. A number that is quite fantastic to treat a disease.

Alzheimer's disease is actually the most common form of dementia. Until now the exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown, but there is a theory that reveals that the interaction between genetic factors and environmental factors is thought to cause abnormalities that cause Alzheimer's disease. Factors that are believed to trigger Alzheimer's disease include heredity, old age, obesity, metabolic disorders, blood fat levels that are too high, to diabetes.

Regarding treatment, until today there has not been found a drug that can completely eliminate Alzheimer's disease. The treatment that has been carried out so far is still limited to therapy aimed at reducing/controlling the symptoms of patients with developments based on the course of Alzheimer's disease itself, such as cholinesterase inhibitors.

With more and more young scientists interested in researching and studying the treatment of Alzheimer's disease as done by Bagus and his friends, it is not impossible that one day a comprehensive therapy for Alzheimer's patients can be found.
