Implementation of Leadership in Basic Health Research Implementation

ABG as a Great Strength in Improving Public Health In the context of the 63rd Anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine, Gajah Mada University and the 27th Anniversary of RSUP DR Sardjoto, the Kagama Commissariat of Medicine held the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). ASM 2009 lasted 3 days, namely 6, 7 and March 8, 2009, composed of 18 choices of workshop and seminar programs from various fields of medical and health sciences.

Faculty of Medicine Universitas Islam Indonesia sent their representatives as participants to attend the workshops and seminars that were held within the framework of the 2009 ASM. Seminar on the first day of ASM 'From Basic and Clinical Research, To Public Health Decision Making', as the representative was dr. Linda Rosita, M.Kes, Sp.PK, dr. Riana Rahmawati, M.Kes and dr. Diani Puspa Wijaya and continued in the afternoon with parallel workshops with various themes starting from the initial process of seeking funds and networking to presenting the results. The first day of the seminar was attended by medical and health practitioners who wanted to develop research, especially in the health sector, in order to continue to improve public health status. Present as the first speaker dr. Triono Soendoro, MS. M.Phil, Ph.D who is an expert staff member of the Minister of Health for Risk Factors. His experience in leading quite a large amount of research during his tenure as Head of Research and Development at the Ministry of Health from 2006-2008 is interesting to observe. Brief but effective, dr. Triono shared his experience leading a team work through Reflections on the Application of Leadership in the Implementation of Basic Health Research in the Ministry of Health Research and Development. Leadership, according to him, is 'using existing people in different ways'.

The process of leadership in research is not an easy thing and requires extra patience in dealing with unexpected things. The second session of the seminar was delivered by 3 speakers, namely Prof. dr. Hari Kusnanto, Josep, SU, Dr.PH with the material How to Learn from History?, dr. Siswanto Agus Wilopo, SU, Sc.D with material from basic and clinical research to political decision making and Prof. dr. Sofia Mubarika, M.Med.Sc, Ph.D. From the second session it was found that researchers must be able to 'sell' their research results to political decision makers as well as to industry and business so that the research results of the researchers are not just filling shelves in the library. The purpose of being able to sell to decision makers is so that the results of the research found can be considered in formulating a policy related to health, both individual health and public health.

An evidence-based policy is important in the accountability of a policy. The principle that researchers need to understand is that researchers should master good communication techniques in conveying the results obtained from their research so that they can be understood by policy makers who generally do not understand various medical or research terms and can then be used as a consideration in making a new policy. While being able to sell research results to business or industry is so that the research results that have been obtained by researchers can be produced and distributed to the wider community so that the initial goal of any health research is to improve public health status so that it can be realized more clearly. If a good collaboration is formed, then this is where a great strength will be born for the development of public health, namely ABG, collaboration between academics (researchers), business and industry and government.
