Becoming a Professional Doctor in the Global Era

In the era of globalization, competition is common, including the medical profession. This is related to the phenomenon of the large number of Indonesian citizens seeking treatment abroad. There are at least 250 high-income people who choose to seek treatment in Malaysia, not counting those seeking treatment in Singapore and Australia. The main cause of them taking treatment abroad is not only because of more complete equipment and the ability of medical staff, but also because of communication problems between patients and doctors. If in Indonesia every doctor only serves each patient for a maximum of 15 minutes, meanwhile outside the legeri, patients are treated as well as possible with an average consultation duration of 1 hour.

The Dean of FK UII said the above during the Inauguration and Oath Taking of FK UII Doctors Batch VIII at the KH Building. Kahar Muzakir on Monday 1 February 2010. The 9 new doctors are Didik Warto, Al Junaidi, Lianita Pradena, Maulida Rahmawati, Intan Trangediantie Pertami, Eka Husnawaty Bahsoan, Adesya Rizqi Ferika, Eka Rosmarini Sari Wulan, and Yohana Sahara. With the addition of these nine new doctors, FK UII as a whole has graduated 196 doctors, most of whom have been spread throughout Indonesia.
Responding to the phenomenon above, Prof. Dr. dr. H. Rusdi Lamsudin, M.Med.Sc, Sp.S(K) as the Dean of FK UII invited the newly sworn in doctors to return to their nature as doctors, in which new doctors are not stuck in a narrow routine of professionalism. According to him, many doctors believe that medical science is only focused on disease problems. even though ideally besides carrying out physical interventions, doctors must play a role in moral and social interventions in society, which implements the triad of doctor roles, where he can be an agent of change, an agent of development, and an agent of treatment ( agent of treatment).

The Dean of FK UII hopes that it is time for the government, in this case the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of National Education, and medical professional institutions to work together to formulate modifications to the division of functions of doctors, educators, researchers, and the division of tasks assigned to them. This is felt necessary because according to him WHO has long been campaigning for The Five Stars Doctor with the ability to be a community leader (community leaders), who have good communication skills (communicator), able to manage (manager), a reliable decision maker (decision maker), and service providers (care providers).

UII Chancellor, Prof. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec., in his speech emphasized the competence and professionalism of doctors including the ability to package their services so that the trick to getting patients is one of the non-negotiable conditions. In fact, being a doctor must also be ready to be placed anywhere, not only concentrated in cities but must be ready when assigned to remote areas that really need it. That's why the ability to communicate with patients must be continuously honed and improved so that later doctors who are graduates of UII can actually practice their knowledge according to the university's foundation, namely doctors who are rahmatan lil alamin and always maintain the medical code of ethics.
