Improved FKUII 2005 KBK Preparation Workshop

Saturday, April 30 2011 took place in room 2.18 of the Faculty of Medicine campus Universitas Islam Indonesia (FK UII) a workshop on Improving the 2005 KBK (Competence-Based Curriculum) of FK UII was held. This workshop was part of the PKPD PHK implementation for the 2011 budget and was the start of a series of activities to improve the 2005 KBK FK UII.

The event which was attended by all the deans and study programs of FK UII, block team coordinators and representatives from each department was opened directly by the Dean of FK UII dr. Isnatin Miladiyah, M.Kes. In her remarks, the Dean emphasized the importance of this curriculum improvement activity as a form of FK UII's efforts to continuously improve the quality of the educational process at FK UII.

The first material was delivered by Prof. dr. Hardiyanto Soebono Sp. KK(K). As chairman of KKI (Indonesian Medical Council) he explained about Challenges and Opportunities in the development of medical education institutions in Indonesia. Beginning with a presentation on the history of the development of the education system in Indonesia, Prof. Hardiyanto said that until 2011 in Indonesia there had been 71 medical education study programs with the largest distribution on the island of Java. Of the 71 medical education study programs, only about half have been accredited. This is one of the big challenges for medical education in Indonesia, including FK UII, because now a new accreditation form has been implemented which can better describe the process and quality of education in medical faculties. Accreditation, quality assurance and medical education standards were presented by Prof. Hardiyanto as a global issue that is important to be considered by FK UII in compiling the educational curriculum at FK UII. No less important than global issues, there are several national issues that must also be taken into consideration in preparing the curriculum at FK UII. Among these national issues are the uneven distribution of medical graduates, the weak competence of medical graduates in the area of public health and SKDI's improvement plans. It is hoped that the improved KBK 2005 will be able to address these challenges.

The second material was delivered by dr. Titi Savitri, M.Med. Ed, PhD from FK UGM who is an expert in the field of medical education with a major interest in curriculum. He explained about the technical aspects of curriculum development, both from the macro, meso and micro curricula. The preparation of the macrocurriculum will produce a curriculum map that includes phase themes and supporting blocks, while the preparation of the mesocurriculum will produce blue print blocks. And the result of preparing the microcurriculum is a block manual for students and tutors.

The expected output of this workshop is the preparation of an improved mesocurriculum design for the KBK FK UII 2005. As material for consideration in the preparation of the mesocurriculum design, in the third session dr. Umatul Khoiriyah as Chair of the MEU (Medical Education Unit) explained the results of the complete evaluation of the 2005 KBK FK UII which had previously been carried out through various activities, one of which was the 2005 KBK FK UII evaluation workshop.

After receiving a presentation on the challenges and opportunities for the development of medical education as well as curriculum development techniques and various inputs from the evaluation results of the 2005 KBK FK UII, the workshop participants who attended were divided into several small groups accompanied by a facilitator to conduct FGDs to discuss the draft curriculum map.

The preparation of the improved KBK FK UII 2005 did not stop at this workshop but would be followed by a series of other activities until a complete draft of the KBK FK UII 2005 was produced. One of the follow-up activities of this workshop is in-house training for the preparation of the microcurriculum which will be held in early May as well as assistance in the preparation of the 2005 KBK FK UII which will be perfected by experts.
