Characteristics of Acute Appendicitis in RUSD Sleman

CHARACTERISTICS OF ACUTE APPENDICITIS
AT SLEMAN HOSPITAL
PERIOD JANUARY 2008 – DECEMBER 2009
 
Acute appendicitis is one of the causes of acute abdomen and several indications for emergency abdominal surgery. The incidence of acute appendicitis in Indonesia ranks highest among cases of emergency abdomen. Acute appendicitis is common in the late teens and early 20s with a decline after age 30. Knowing the distribution of patients with acute appendicitis based on gender, age, clinical manifestations, and leukocyte count. This research is a non-analytic descriptive research.
 
Data collection was carried out in a non-experimental cross-sectional study with a retrospective method using data from medical records of acute appendicitis patients at Sleman General Hospital. Of the 186 patients with acute appendicitis at Sleman General Hospital in the period January 2008-December 2009: 45,10% male patients and 54,80% female. Patients aged 0-10 years 13,90%, ages 11-20 years 24,10%, ages 21-30 years 20,90%, ages 31-40 years 14,50%, ages 41-50 years 16,60% , age 51-60 years 6,40%, age 61-70 years 2,10%, age 71-80 years 1,00%. Patients with clinical manifestations of lower right abdominal pain 96,70%, nausea 26,80%, vomiting 19,80%, fever 19,35%, Mc Burney tenderness (36,50%), rebound tenderness 3,20%, signs rovsing 8,60%, psoas sign 17,70%, obturator sign 12,90%, no symptoms 1,00%. Patients with a normal leukocyte count of 50,00%, leukocytosis 47,80%, 2,10% not examined. Acute appendicitis patients are more common in women, aged 11-30 years.
 
Symptoms that usually appear are right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. On physical examination the patient found Mc Burney tenderness, psoas sign, rebound tenderness, rovsing, and obturator. As for the examination of the leukocyte count, normal leukocytes occur in patients with acute appendicitis.
