Relationship between Anxiety Levels and Smoking and Factors Associated with Smoking Anxiety

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEVEL OF ANXIETY AND SMOKING AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH ANXIETY AND SMOKING IN NEW STUDENTS OF FK UII IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2006/2007
 
Background. Changes in the living environment and changes in educational programs for new students are psychosocial stressors which if not handled properly will cause anxiety and other mental disorders. Anxiety can adversely affect a person's work if it occurs frequently. Many things can be done to overcome them, but smoking is one of the compensation that is often found. Smoking is an important issue because smoking can adversely affect health.
Research purposes. Knowing the relationship between anxiety levels and smokers and factors associated with anxiety and smoking, the anxiety levels of smokers and non-smokers in new students of FK UII in the 2006/2007 academic year.
Research Way. This research is a non-experimental research with a cross-sectional type which was conducted on new students of Faculty of Medicine UII in the 2006/2007 academic year. The research subjects were male students who were smokers and non-smokers who met the inclusion criteria. The instruments used were the Analog Nxiety Scale (AAS) to measure anxiety levels, smoking habit questionnaires, and the Lie scale to measure lying levels.
Results. The results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between anxiety levels and smoking. Where the average anxiety score of smokers is greater than non-smokers. The average anxiety of smokers is mild anxiety while non-smokers are not anxious. Most smokers are light smokers.
