Relationship between Knowledge and Attitudes of Young Women towards the Dangers of Cigarettes

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE OF ADOLESCENT WOMEN
AGAINST THE DANGERS OF PASSIVE SMOKING IN SURYOWIJAYAN, YOGYAKARTA

 

Many studies have proven that passive smoking has the same dangers or risks as active smokers regarding health problems. According to a survey in Indonesia, the victims of passive smoking are mostly women and children. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and the relationship between the two among young women in Suryowijayan, Yogyakarta regarding the dangers of passive smoking. The study used a cross sectional approach with analytic descriptive quantitative method.

The research instrument used a questionnaire. The number of respondents was 45 people. The results obtained were 41 people (91,11%) with a high level of knowledge, 4 people (8,89%) with a moderate level of knowledge, 0% of respondents with less knowledge. From the attitude, respondents who support efforts to protect passive smokers are 37 people (82,22%), enough to support 8 people (17,78%), and 0% who do not support enough. From the analysis of the relationship, the result is p=0,0557 (p>0,05), meaning that there is no relationship between knowledge and attitudes of young women towards the dangers of passive smoking in Suryowijayan, Yogyakarta.

In conclusion, the knowledge of young women in the area is on average good and they have a supportive attitude towards efforts to protect passive smokers. However, there is no relationship between knowledge and attitudes, which may be caused by socio-cultural factors from the local community.
