Factors Influencing Smoking Behavior

FACTORS INFLUENCING SMOKING BEHAVIOR IN CLASS 1 STUDENTS OF MUHAMMADIYAH 1 SCHOOL, JOGJAKARTA
 
Background. Smoking is a problem that cannot be resolved until now. Smoking has hit various groups, both children and parents, men and women, especially high school students. Many factors can cause these students to smoke. Allegedly several factors that influence smoking behavior include the influence of parents, the influence of friends, personality factors and because of advertising. This, if left unchecked, will greatly affect his physical condition and will further hinder his achievement at school.
Research purposes. This study aims to determine the dominant factors that influence smoking behavior in grade 1 students at SMU Muhammadiyah 1 Jogjakarta.
Method. This is a non-experimental research with a descriptive method. Data from research subjects were obtained by using a questionnaire which was distributed to all first grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Jogjakarta in the academic year 1/2004, totaling 2005 people. The questionnaire contains questions about smoking status and factors that cause students to smoke.
 
Results. Examined as many as 412 students, found 32 students who smoke. The results showed that the factors influencing the smoking behavior of 1st graders at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 were due to the influence of friends by 12,2%, advertisements by 5,9%, parental influence by 4% and personality factors by 1,5%. So the most influential factor is due to the influence of friends.
 
Conclusion. The most dominant factor influencing smoking behavior is due to the influence of friends.
