Factors Affecting Internet Access Speed

Almost everyone in the UII environment often complains about the slow internet on campus. The problem of slow internet is an issue that is always encountered when working or studying with IT at UII. This problem is a classic so it seems that people are ignorant. People were more surprised when suddenly the connection was very fast – he said. At most, a day or two will return to slow again. For users, there may often be a question mark, what's wrong, even though the bandwidth is quite large, 4 MBps, and some are even released unlimited for certain places. The following is some information about the factors that cause slow internet access at FK UII.

I. INTERNAL FACTORS
1. Â Â Â Â User's computer.
a. Computer specifications, the faster the processor and the larger the memory/RAM can make data accessed faster too,
b. There is a virus on the computer, the virus can take up internet bandwidth or the virus can make it seem as if the computer is busy running programs so that the computer load becomes heavy.
c. Anti-virus is not updated, if there is a new virus it can infect the data or computer system. A clean system will affect the speed of internet access.
d. Operating System used,
· the more recent it should be the more optimal
· the newer the operating system, the more resources/specs it requires. If it is forced to be installed on low specifications / not supported, it will actually burden the company.
e. Browsers,
· the type of browser also affects the speed in displaying page contents of a website.
· Even between Mozilla, Google Chrom, and Internet Explorer, each will have different access speed. The speed of the browser in processing plugins and program codes such as JavaScript also affects the speed of internet access.

2. Â Â Â User behavior on the internet
a. How many website addresses do you access at the same time? The more web addresses that are accessed at the same time, the more data that must be downloaded with the same bandwidth capacity conditions.
b. The type of website accessed also affects its speed, a website that contains videos/images takes longer to display than a website that only contains text
c. Using applications (software) to speed up file downloads can cause activities such as browsing to slow down.
d. the number of applications that are opened, for example browsing while opening multimedia applications such as music, etc

3. Location, Strong signal only gives you a connection that rarely falter

II. EXTERNAL FACTORS

1. The amount of bandwidth from the ISP

2. Media liaison between the user and the ISP
· the capacity of the media must be greater than the capacity of the source provided by the ISP. The type of media used also affects the quality of the internet accessed, especially for the level of stability.
· devices must also be compatible, for example between switches or cables, one supports large data – the other supports small data, so access to the data obtained will also follow the small one.

3. The condition of the destination website
· A website that is busy with visitors can cause a maximum speed limit that can be accessed by its users, this aims to reduce the server hardware workload from the server and several other non-technical reasons. Not all websites allow their users to access them at maximum speed.
· the location where the website that we want to access stores its files or the server that serves it. For example international websites such as America's Yahoo, of course the servers are in America, there is a difference in access time between local websites and international websites.

4. The number of users / internet users in one local area network or LAN.
If there are very many users, it becomes crowded because they are fighting each other to access certain files or sites.
From these several factors, FK UII has identified that the most common cause of slow or slow internet access is users who download files that are too large just for entertainment such as comics, videos and games that are not very educational. As a result, other users are hampered in accessing it, especially if the person concerned masters IT so that they can lock access for their own interests without any hindrance at all regardless of the bandwidth. Hopefully, in FK UII, everyone can be more reliable and wise in using internet facilities for academic purposes. Regards/SAA
