Kaliurang (UII News) – Maternal and infant mortality rates are still high in Indonesia, especially in remote areas which have limited access to health and medical personnel. Therefore we as lecturers, tutors, instructors must teach students how to detect signs of obstetric and neonatal emergencies, as well as how to handle these emergencies.

This was conveyed by doctor Dewi Retno WZ, as a lecturer in block 3.1 Pregnancy and Reproductive Problems of FK UII after attending Basic Emergency Obstetrics and Neonatal Services (PONED) training at RSCM Jakarta on Thursday, 23 Sya'ban 1438 H/20 April 2017.

According to Doctor Dewi, the main objective of this activity is to improve maternal and neonatal health services through standard health care procedures carried out by skilled service personnel at the primary health care level with the support of partners from local government and non-government organizations.

"Students must always be reminded and taught how to recognize emergency signs in obstetrics and neonates, as well as proper management," he said.

This is in accordance with the government's recommendations for efforts to increase the knowledge and skills of health workers which are expected to have a direct impact on the quality of emergency maternal and neonatal services. This training was held in cooperation between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, the Provincial/District/City Health Service and the National Reproductive Health Clinic Training Network, POGI, IDAI, IBI, PPNI. The management of cooperation, coordination, program integration and the principles of program continuity will provide certainty for effective and efficient training and service consolidation.
